Are you afraid of loosing your job because of AI?

Snorkeling is one of my favorite things to do in summer. It’s peaceful swimming in the ocean and letting the waves gently roll over you.  It’s adventurous when you turn a corner and come face to face with a very large sea lion [yes that has happened to me!] and there’s a bit of mystery, as you never know exactly which species will make an appearance [like the time a small octopus appeared at my feet].

It reminds me of our career journey. Peaceful at times, like when you’ve been at the same job, it can be a bit on the peaceful side because you know what you're doing and things settle into a familiar routine. It can be adventurous when you start a new job. Oh! The excitement of a new office, new responsibilities and special projects. At other times, our career journey becomes mysterious when we feel like we don’t know what the future holds. Anyone feel like that right now?

I think we are in a mysterious stage– what does the future hold for us?

With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), there is a common concern among career professionals that their jobs may be taken away. While this is a valid concern, it's important to note that AI will also create new jobs and opportunities that may not have existed before. As a career professional, it's essential to stay up to date with the latest trends and technology, and adapt to the changes in the job market.

“According to a report by the World Economic Forum, it is estimated that by 2025, AI will create 97 million new jobs globally.”

These new jobs will require a mix of both technical and soft skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

So, how can career professionals prepare themselves for these new job opportunities? Here are five ways:

1. Develop New Skills: Upskilling or reskilling is essential to stay relevant in the job market. Identify the skills required for the jobs that are likely to be in demand and start learning them. There are many online courses available, such as LinkedIn Learning, that offer training in technical and soft skills.

2. Embrace Technology: As AI becomes more prevalent in the workplace, it's essential to be comfortable with technology. Learn how to use the latest tools and software related to your industry.

3. Be Adaptable: Flexibility and adaptability are crucial in the rapidly changing job market. Be open to new experiences and willing to take on new challenges.

4. Network: Networking is a great way to learn about new job opportunities and stay informed about the latest industry trends. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with industry leaders on LinkedIn.

5. Brand Yourself: Your personal brand is your reputation, and it's essential to create a strong brand that highlights your unique skills and experience. Use LinkedIn to showcase your accomplishments, connect with industry leaders, and share your knowledge with others. [and if you need help defining your personal brand, let’s talk]

While AI may replace some jobs, it will also create new job opportunities that require a mix of technical and soft skills. As a career professional, it's essential to stay up to date with the latest trends and technology, develop new skills, and network with industry leaders. By doing so, you'll be better prepared to pivot into one of the many new jobs created by AI. Remember, the future of work is all about adaptability, and as the saying goes, "The only constant in life is change."

Now, let's go snorkeling and explore the wonders of the underwater world, just like we explore the ever-evolving job market!
